History of the Inti Raymi

The Inti Raymi (in Quechua ‘festival of the Sun’) was an ancient Andean religious ceremony in honor of the Inti (the sun god) that took place every June 24 of every year until today, it took place every June solstice. winter in Cusco, the capital of Tawantinsuyo, between the final period of the harvest and the beginning of the winter equinox of the Andes, that is, in the second half of the month of June. Inti Raymi in the time of the Inkas was the equivalent of what the New Year’s party is for us today. The solar celebration was a festival in which a new year began and the entire previous agricultural year ended between the months of May or June, and at the same time the new agricultural cycle began from the month of July.

During the time of the Incas, Inti Raymi was the most important of the four festivals celebrated in Cusco, according to the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega (1539-1616), and it indicated the middle of the year as well as the mythical origin of the Inca . It lasted 15 days, in which there were dances and sacrifices. The last Inti Raymi with the presence of the Inca emperor was carried out in 1535.

In 1572, Viceroy Francisco de Toledo (1515-1584) banned it because he considered it a pagan ceremony and contrary to the Catholic faith. It continued to be carried out clandestinely.

With more than sixty years of existence, the new Inti Raymi is now an inseparable part of the life of Cusco.

Itinerary

Inti Raymi Tour June 24, Ceremony Stages

In a privileged place in the sacred capital, the Inka Pachakuteq ordered the construction of the Qorikancha, a lavish temple dedicated to revering the Sun, a god whom the Inkas called Apu P`unchao or Apu Inti, in whose honor the imposing INTI festival was consecrated. RAYMI, which reaches contours of solemnity and splendor, as described by the most important chroniclers.

On June 24, the festival in honor of the Sun God, takes place in the three historical and natural settings that are usually used for staging:

  • The Qorikancha (Golden Fence): In Inca times it was the main temple consecrated to the sun. At 9:00 am the Festival of the Sun begins. The representation takes place in the so-called golden garden. It begins with the appearance of the Inca. The first rituals offer coca leaves, llamas, alpacas and more. It lasts approximately 45 minutes and then goes to the Plaza de Armas.
  • The Plaza de Armas (the old Auqaypata or Plaza del Guerrero): During the Inca period, in this immense plaza the ceremony took place in its entirety in the middle of the great ushnu or ceremonial platform. The Inca is carried on a litter by eight servants and performs the so-called Coca Ceremony. The event lasts approximately 1 hour and then goes to Sacsayhuaman.
  • Saqsayhuaman (voice derived from the Quechua terms “saqsay” and “waman” which translated into Spanish means “satiate yourself hawk”). This impressive archaeological center is located at 3,555 meters above sea level, one kilometer from the Inca neighborhood of Qolqanpata. The Chuquipampa esplanade in the Sacsayhuaman fortress is the main stage for the representation of Inti Raymi. This place enjoyed great importance during the Inca Empire.

An agency very close to the client We travelled as family and we found that we were treated more like friends rather than customer. Already from the start we could talk, ask lots of questions, change the plan, Gladys would always reply immediately, politely without being annoyed and trust me I ask LOTS of questions; but still perfect answer and we also skype in order to go faster and even more precise. Once that was done, in Peru it was the same, sometimes we had to change something or add places to the program because I've discovered a "must see"; again no annoyance from them, they were happy to add things in our program. Therefore for me it is a perfect agency. My criteria are simple if you are on holidays and you feel pressured by the agency then it is not holidays. With Leading Peru this will never happen, holidays are really holidays, just let them drive you they are excellente

Day trip to Machu Picchu We used Leading Peru for the one day trip to Machu Picchu. We extended this a bit by staying in Aguas Calientes for one night. They were really accommodating about this and the only extra cost is whatever your hotel charges (and you can find your own / make it as inexpensive as you'd like). They are really responsive and attentive to these kinds of changes. The whole process went pretty well. They came and visited us at our hotel in Cusco the night before we were set to leave to give us all of our tickets and explain the procedures for the next day. The organizer and driver were both really awesome -- knowledgable and very kind. On the actual day, everything went fairly well. There were people set up at each sort of check point shouting our name so we knew to go to them. They kind of drive you to the train, put you on the train, get you from the train to the bus, and get you off the bus. The rest is on your own. The only hiccup was our tour guide was not there when we got off on the bus at Machu Picchu. The Spanish speaking tour guide was there though (and, from what I gathered, the English speaking tour guide who was supposed to meet us there was late -- the Spanish speaking tour guide was kind of reprimanding him on the phone), and he was able to link us up with another English speaking group. I am not totally sure how this transaction occurred. It seems like Leading Peru hooks you up with a bunch of contracted workers rather than employing full time people themselves (though I think this is also what keeps the price very low). So, I don't totally understand how we were kind of pawned off / connected with another tour group (it had a different name and everything), but it happened and we were glad that it did. Once we were with the English speaking tour guide from another agency (I think), everything was really great and he was a good tour guide. Other than that little misstep, everything went really well!
